How to Quiet A Noisy Air Conditioner

Air conditioning has made modern life bearable during the hottest of summer days. But like with all appliances, things happen and parts wear down over time. Potentially leaving you with costly repairs or replacements. If you’re experiencing a noisy air conditioner, we have some basic knowledge that can help you quiet your window air conditioner, central air conditioner, and even if your outside AC unit is making loud noises.

With a little basic knowledge of maintaining your air conditioning unit, you can silence a noisy air conditioner without the need of a certified HVAC expert. This of course has its limits, however, many times it’s a simple fix that can make all the difference when it comes to a noisy air conditioner.

Check The Compressor & Condenser

The compressor is responsible for circulating the refrigerant within your AC unit, whereas the condenser collects and releases heat. These units can cause a loud buzzing noise which could be a sign that the motors are wearing down. This is especially true for AC units that are more than 10 years old, meaning that it may be time to repair or replace the unit.

Check & Tighten Any Loose Screws

Sometimes the constant vibrations that your AC unit produces can cause screws to wiggle loose. By simply checking screws throughout your AC unit, especially around the condenser unit, you can ensure that things aren’t rattling around when your unit kicks on. Routine tune-ups and annual maintenance can help spot potential issues with loose bolts and screws, helping prolong the life of your air conditioner as well as reducing the amount of noise it makes.

Clean The Fan Blades

Dust build-up on your AC’s fan blades can amplify any noises that your AC unit is already making. By simply cleaning the fan blades gently with the brush attachment on your vacuum cleaner, you can potentially reduce the noise that your AC unit makes.

Use Fences & Sound Blankets

If you’re wondering how to reduce noise from an outside air conditioner, consider building a fence around your unit as a sound barrier. Other options such as sound blankets also act as a noise barrier, bringing your noisy air conditioner to a reasonable sound level that both you and your neighbors will appreciate.
