Three Reasons Your Air Conditioner Is Not Blowing Cold Air

The warm season is upon us. There’s nothing worse than coming home from a long summer day’s work to a hot house with no air conditioning. And if you’re working from home, you certainly don’t want to sit on virtual meetings all day long in that airless indoor heat. But keep your cool, there’s no need to worry.

At Hearn Plumbing Heating & Air, keeping your home comfortable when you need it the most is our top priority, and so is keeping you informed on what may be causing your air conditioner to malfunction.

If your air conditioning isn’t blowing cold air, these are a few possible reasons why:

You Have a Dirty Air Filter

A dirty air filter restricts airflow and will block an air conditioner’s passageways, so cold air won’t be able to pass through efficiently. Before anything else, check the airflow of your air filter. If you don’t feel much circulation, it could be time to change your filter. If you see that your filter is dirty, swap it out for a fresh one. It’s smart to get into the habit of checking and changing your filter regularly.

You Thermostat Is Off

Your thermostat might be set to ON instead of AUTO. When a fan’s setting is stuck at ON, it’s running 24/7, but the air isn’t being cooled. Instead, set the thermostat to AUTO. This detail can be easily overlooked.

In the event your thermostat is not working, it will need to be replaced. Don’t worry, we can help with that too.

But first, we advise you to check the thermostat batteries (if your thermostat uses batteries) and make sure they’re fresh. If your thermostat is wired, check the circuit breaker to make sure you haven’t either tripped it or blown a fuse.

Also, you should ensure your thermostat is properly installed and up to date. It’s best to install thermostats where the sun can’t reach them. Thermostats placed in direct sunlight almost always experience premature wear.

There’s an Air Duct Leak

Before it reaches different areas of your house, cold air travels through a series of air ducts. Sometimes, loosely insulated or poorly sealed air ducts can cause air to leak in places you don’t want it to. When this happens, it can be a pain getting air to circulate properly, and you might not be getting air flow to the places you need it most. If you have old air ducts, it might be time to schedule an inspection with one of our HVAC technicians.
